Photography comes and goes in phases for me; I have been absent here for some time but I guess it's starting back up again.

I broke my beloved Sony DSC-R1 last month. It still turns on, the circuitry and lens and everything seem fine and it still takes pictures, but the physical controls don't function correctly (barely at all), and I was quoted WAY too high a price for repair.

For now I'm borrowing my mother's little-used Pasasonic G2 (a Micro Four-Thirds camera, which is something I've been considering for some time now) with kit lenses. Frankly, I don't like it much. The controls are too cumbersome (not as many dials as the R1 and the interface isn't as well-designed) and the picture quality isn't noticeably better. And of course I miss the God-lens on the R1, but I'm just going to have to live with that.

Out of the blue I have some gigs/shoots coming up - a party this Friday, a big ball a month from now (a proper expensive one, hundreds of people, at the aquarium!) and perhaps something portrait-y/fashion-y/what do you call it when it's one or two people wearing interesting things and you go somewhere interesting and just experiment, with or without a solid plan? One of those. Not a cosplay this time, though.

Great time to kill my camera, eh. Not even kidding, for four years, that R1 WAS photography as far as I was concerned. (Not counting the last year cos I barely touched the thing.) Gonna miss you, buddy.

I enjoyed Avatar. Really. But my brain is starting to hurt from seeing so much bloody Na'vi fan art and from reading testimonials from people whose lives seem to have been somehow changed by this (very unoriginal) movie. They are silly giant blue cat people. I don't get the obsession. Blah.

Oh dear

<Oscar> there are no words
to describe the magnitude
the epictude
of how much i just failed
<Oscar> i caught the train into town
with my trenchcoat
freezing my ass off
stood over the river
the fog was perfect
it looked like Bladerunner
dark grey sky, red and gold lights on the skyscrapers disappearing up into the clouds
set up my tripod
pulled out my camera
<Cham> I'd ask you to show me a picture...
<Oscar> sinking feeling
<Cham> but I have a hunch you can't
<Oscar> i've forgotten my tripod mounting plate.

Oh well, if I'm understanding the bureau of meteorology's website correctly, the fog might be even better and/or longer lasting in the next couple of mornings anyway. Here's hoping.

So much to see

Well, I've not been on deviantART much lately, but I have some new photos to submit, so I thought I'd take the time to look through the 900+ deviations in my message center. Finally done. Still got 450+ deviants' galleries bookmarked that I haven't yet properly perused...

Anyhoo, another recent pair of shoots with Annie and Siera. Less silly-arty processing this time, more straight-up portraits to show off their outfits. Also recently took some photos on the dried-up plateau that used to be Lake Colac; might be something interesting there, haven't really looked at the results yet x.x

Colour

1 min read
Since getting my fantastic new monitor with its eye-popping colour range, I've submitted some very highly-saturated images, not always because I've enhanced the colours much but because I'm photographing colourful things. I haven't tried viewing them on my MacBook's inbuilt screen because I know they'll look disgusting, being full of colours that are way outside that screen's colour gamut and end up being clipped or dampened, depending on the software. I hate to think that there are people out there viewing my photos not as they are meant to be seen, and this is one case in which I am thankful for Windows browsers' lack of colour management. Life would be slightly nicer if images were able to specify how to be reproduced on displays with different colour spaces. Ah well...
